How to Calculate Grass Seed Requirements

This calculator helps you determine the amount of grass seed needed for your lawn project based on area and grass type.

Formula Used:

Area = Length x Width

Pounds Needed = (Area x Seeding Rate) / 1000

Grass Types:

  • Fescue: Cool-season grass, shade tolerant ($4-8 per lb)
  • Bermuda Grass: Warm-season grass, drought tolerant ($3-7 per lb)
  • Kentucky Bluegrass: Cool-season grass, fine texture ($6-10 per lb)
  • Ryegrass: Fast-germinating, cool-season grass ($2-6 per lb)
  • Zoysia: Warm-season, low-maintenance grass ($8-15 per lb)

Seeding Types:

  • New Lawn: Higher seeding rate for establishment
  • Overseeding: Lower rate for filling in existing lawn

Typical Seeding Rates (per 1000 sq ft):

  • Fescue (New): 8 lbs | (Overseed): 4 lbs
  • Bermuda (New): 2 lbs | (Overseed): 1 lb
  • Kentucky Bluegrass (New): 3 lbs | (Overseed): 1.5 lbs
  • Ryegrass (New): 8 lbs | (Overseed): 4 lbs
  • Zoysia (New): 1 lb | (Overseed): 0.5 lbs

Best Seeding Times:

  • Cool-season grasses: Early fall or early spring
  • Warm-season grasses: Late spring to early summer
  • Avoid seeding: During extreme heat or cold

Seeding Tips:

  • Measure the area accurately in square feet
  • Consider the climate and growing season
  • Prepare soil properly before seeding
  • Water consistently after seeding
  • Avoid walking on newly seeded areas
  • Consider soil type and sun exposure
