Self-Leveling Compound Guide

Product Types

  • Standard Self-Leveling: Most common, good for general use
  • High Flow Underlayment: Better flow, fewer trowel marks
  • Fiber Reinforced: Added strength, less cracking
  • Rapid Set Formula: Quick setting, fast turnaround
  • Feather Finish: Thin applications, smooth surfaces

Thickness Guidelines

  • 1/16" (Feather Edge): Smoothing minor imperfections
  • 1/8" (Standard): Most common application thickness
  • 1/4": Moderate leveling and slope correction
  • 1/2": Significant leveling, filling low spots
  • 1"+ : Major corrections, structural leveling

Substrate Preparation

  • Concrete: Clean, no primer needed
  • Wood Subfloor: Prime first, ensure deflection limits
  • Ceramic Tile: Prime glazed surfaces
  • Vinyl/Linoleum: Remove or score heavily
  • Metal: Prime and roughen surface

Application Steps

  1. Clean substrate thoroughly
  2. Apply primer if required (24-hour cure)
  3. Mix compound according to directions
  4. Pour and spread immediately
  5. Use spike roller to remove air bubbles
  6. Allow to self-level and cure

Important Considerations

  • Check maximum thickness limits for your product
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during application
  • Maintain temperature between 50°F - 90°F
  • Work in manageable sections
  • Have enough material mixed for entire area
  • Plan for 24-48 hour cure before foot traffic

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Cracking: Usually from substrate movement or too thick
  • Poor Flow: Insufficient mixing water or old product
  • Slow Cure: Low temperature or high humidity
  • Adhesion Issues: Contaminated substrate or missing primer
  • Surface Defects: Air bubbles or trowel marks
