Roof Sheathing Calculator
Use our Roof Sheathing Calculator to determine the materials needed for roof decking including panels, fasteners, and installation costs. Calculate everything from OSB to plywood to ZIP sheathing.
How to Calculate Roof Sheathing Materials
Roof sheathing provides structural support and creates a base for roofing materials. Proper calculation ensures you have the right materials for your project.
Step 1: Choose Sheathing Material
Select the appropriate sheathing type based on your requirements:
- OSB (Oriented Strand Board): Economical choice, good for most applications
- CDX Plywood: Traditional choice with excellent strength properties
- ZIP Sheathing: Integrated moisture barrier, faster installation
- Consider thickness based on rafter spacing and local codes
Step 2: Calculate Sheets Needed
Standard sheathing panels are 4' x 8' (32 square feet):
- Roof area / 32 sq ft = base number of sheets
- Add waste factor: 5% simple roof, 10% standard, 15% complex
- Round up to nearest whole number of sheets
- Example: 1,200 sq ft + 10% waste = 1,320 sq ft / 32 = 42 sheets
Step 3: Fastener Requirements
Proper fastening is critical for structural integrity:
- Nail spacing: 6" on edges, 12" in field (typical)
- Ring shank nails: Best holding power for high winds
- Construction screws: Superior holding, easier removal
- Calculate approximately 1.5-2 lbs of nails per 100 sq ft
Roof Sheathing Installation Guidelines
Proper installation of roof sheathing is crucial for structural performance and weather protection.
Thickness Guidelines
- 7/16" thickness: Rafters 16" or 24" on center
- 5/8" thickness: Rafters up to 32" on center
- 3/4" thickness: Heavy loads, rafters up to 48" OC
- Check local building codes for specific requirements
Installation Requirements
- Leave 1/8" gap between sheets for expansion
- Stagger joints for strength (avoid four corners meeting)
- Nail every 6" on edges, 12" in field
- Use proper nail length (2.5x sheathing thickness minimum)
- Support all edges with framing or blocking
Quality Considerations
- Use Exposure 1 rated material for structural applications
- Look for APA stamp ensuring quality standards
- Moisture content should be below 19%
- Store flat and keep dry before installation
- Replace any damaged or delaminated panels
Edge Treatment Options
- Square Edge: Requires blocking at unsupported edges
- Tongue & Groove: Self-supporting, no blocking needed
- H-Clips: Support unsupported edges between rafters
- Consider wind load requirements when selecting edge treatment
