Use our Road Base Calculator to estimate crushed stone and gravel base materials for road and driveway construction. Calculate volume, weight, and costs for proper foundation preparation.

Road Base Materials and Specifications

Proper road base is essential for any paved surface's longevity and performance. The base provides structural support, drainage, and a stable foundation for the surface material.

Common Base Materials

  • Crushed Stone (¾" minus): Most common, excellent drainage and stability
  • Dense-Graded Aggregate: Mix of sizes, maximum density when compacted
  • Recycled Concrete: Eco-friendly, similar performance to crushed stone
  • Bank Run Gravel: Natural material, less expensive but variable quality
  • Stabilized Base: Cement or lime-modified for heavy traffic areas

Base Thickness Requirements

  • Residential Driveways: 4-6 inches compacted thickness
  • Commercial Driveways: 6-8 inches compacted thickness
  • Light Traffic Roads: 6-10 inches depending on subgrade
  • Heavy Traffic Roads: 8-12+ inches with engineered design
  • Parking Areas: 4-8 inches based on vehicle weight

Installation Guidelines

  • Test and prepare subgrade soil properly before base installation
  • Install base material in maximum 6-inch lifts
  • Compact each lift to 95% of maximum dry density
  • Maintain proper moisture content during compaction
  • Create crown or cross-slope for drainage (2% minimum)
  • Order 5-10% extra material to account for compaction

Quality Control

  • Verify material gradation meets specifications
  • Test compaction with nuclear density gauge or sand cone
  • Check final elevation and grade before paving
  • Ensure adequate drainage away from finished surface
