Pool Sand Calculator
Pool Filter Sand Guide
This calculator helps determine the amount of filter sand needed for your pool sand filter based on filter size and sand type.
Sand Types & Characteristics:
- • Silica Sand (#20): Standard option, 100 lbs/ft3, most economical
- • Glass Sand Media: Eco-friendly, 85 lbs/ft3, better filtration
- • Zeolite Sand: Premium option, 55 lbs/ft3, excellent filtration
Filter Size Guidelines:
- • 16-19" filters: Small pools, 150-250 lbs sand
- • 20-22" filters: Medium pools, 250-350 lbs sand
- • 24-26" filters: Large pools, 350-500 lbs sand
- • 30"+ filters: Very large pools, 500+ lbs sand
Sand Bed Depth:
- • Minimum depth: 18 inches for effective filtration
- • Maximum depth: 24 inches to prevent channeling
- • Proper depth ensures even water distribution
- • Too shallow reduces filtration efficiency
- • Too deep creates pressure issues
Sand Replacement Signs:
- • Sand is 3-5 years old
- • Backwashing doesn't clear cloudy water
- • Sand has calcified or clumped together
- • Filter pressure stays high after backwashing
- • Visible debris passes through filter
Installation Tips:
- • Remove old sand completely before adding new
- • Fill tank 1/3 with water to cushion laterals
- • Add sand slowly to prevent lateral damage
- • Use funnel or sand sock for easier pouring
- • Level sand bed after installation
Maintenance Schedule:
- • Backwash when pressure rises 8-10 psi
- • Rinse for 30-60 seconds after backwashing
- • Deep clean with filter cleaner quarterly
- • Replace sand every 3-5 years
- • Inspect laterals during sand changes
