Pool Heater Size Calculator

Typical range: 12-24 hours

How Pool Heater Calculator Works

This calculator determines the BTU output required for your pool heater based on volume, temperature rise, and heating time.

Formula Used:

BTU Required = (Pool Volume x 8.33 x Temperature Rise) / Time / Efficiency x 1.15

Heater Types & Efficiency:

  • • Natural Gas: 80% efficiency
  • • Propane: 80% efficiency
  • • Electric: 95% efficiency
  • • Heat Pump: 75% efficiency (COP factor)

Sizing Guidelines:

  • • Small pools: 100K-200K BTU
  • • Medium pools: 200K-300K BTU
  • • Large pools: 300K-400K BTU
  • • Commercial pools: 400K+ BTU

Factors Affecting Heating:

  • • Pool surface area (heat loss)
  • • Wind exposure
  • • Pool cover usage
  • • Ambient air temperature
  • • Altitude and humidity

Energy Saving Tips:

  • • Use a pool cover when not in use
  • • Install windbreaks around pool
  • • Heat pump for mild climates
  • • Solar heating for warm regions
  • • Lower temperature when away

Operating Costs (per hour):

  • • Natural gas: $3-8
  • • Propane: $8-15
  • • Electric: $5-12
  • • Heat pump: $2-6
