Pool Chlorine Calculator
How Pool Chlorine Calculator Works
This calculator determines the amount of chlorine needed to achieve and maintain proper sanitization levels in your pool.
Formula Used:
Chlorine Amount = (Pool Volume x PPM Increase x 8.33) / (% Available Chlorine x 100)
Ideal Chlorine Levels:
- • Free Chlorine: 1.0 - 3.0 ppm
- • Combined Chlorine: less than 0.2 ppm
- • Total Chlorine: Free + Combined
Chlorine Types & Strengths:
- • Liquid Chlorine: 12.5% available chlorine
- • Cal-Hypo powder: 70% available chlorine
- • Dichlor granular: 62% available chlorine
- • Trichlor tablets: 90% available chlorine
Dosing Guidelines:
- • Test chlorine levels 2-3 times per week
- • Add chlorine in evening/night
- • Distribute evenly around pool perimeter
- • Run pump for 8+ hours after adding
- • Wait 15 minutes before swimming
Factors Affecting Chlorine:
- • Sunlight degrades chlorine quickly
- • High temperatures increase consumption
- • Heavy bather loads deplete chlorine
- • Rain and debris consume chlorine
- • Poor circulation reduces effectiveness
Safety Notes:
- • Never mix different chlorine types
- • Store chemicals in cool, dry place
- • Keep away from acids and other chemicals
- • Use appropriate measuring tools
