Pool Alkalinity Calculator
How Pool Alkalinity Calculator Works
This calculator determines how much chemical to add to adjust your pool's total alkalinity to the optimal range.
Alkalinity Adjustment Formulas:
To Increase:
Baking Soda (lbs) = (PPM Increase / 10) x 1.5 x (Pool Volume / 10,000)
To Decrease:
Muriatic Acid (fl oz) = (PPM Decrease / 10) x (Pool Volume / 1,000)
Ideal Alkalinity Levels:
- • Optimal range: 80-120 ppm
- • Minimum acceptable: 60 ppm
- • Maximum acceptable: 180 ppm
- • Critical: Below 60 or above 200 ppm
Why Alkalinity Matters:
- • pH buffer - prevents rapid pH swings
- • Protects pool equipment from corrosion
- • Prevents plaster etching and staining
- • Improves chlorine effectiveness
- • Enhances swimmer comfort
Adjustment Guidelines:
- • Adjust alkalinity before adjusting pH
- • Make gradual changes over several days
- • Test 6-8 hours after chemical addition
- • Never exceed 20 ppm change per day
- • Circulate water for proper mixing
Common Alkalinity Problems:
- • Low Alkalinity: pH instability, equipment damage
- • High Alkalinity: Cloudy water, scaling, poor chlorine efficiency
- • Rapid Changes: Usually indicates water balance issues
Chemical Safety:
- • Baking soda: Generally safe, dissolve before adding
- • Muriatic acid: Dangerous - wear protection, add slowly
- • Never mix chemicals together
- • Store chemicals properly and separately
