This calculator helps you determine the amount of gravel and sand needed for a durable paver base. Enter your project’s length, width, and planned gravel and sand depths to get an estimate. You can also calculate costs and input custom material density values if needed.
Results
The calculator uses standard material density ranges: 1.4-1.7 tons per cubic yard for gravel and 1.2-1.4 tons for sand. You can override these with specific values from your supplier if available.
Please note that our calculator does NOT include contingency materials. We typically recommend ordering 10-20% extra to account for delivery losses and compaction.
We suggest consulting with an engineer for larger projects or difficult soil conditions, as local site conditions may require specific adjustments.
How Deep Should a Paver Base Be?
The depth of your paver base directly affects the longevity and stability of your installation. Generally, a total depth of 8-12 inches (including all preparation layers) is recommended, though this varies based on soil type, local climate, and intended use.
For pedestrian walkways, 4-6 inches of gravel and 1 inch of sand is sufficient. Driveways for passenger vehicles require 6-8 inches of gravel and 1 inch of sand. Areas for heavy equipment or trucks need a base depth of 10-12 inches of gravel, possibly with added geotextile for reinforcement.
When in doubt, make the base deeper than recommended. An additional 2-3 inches of gravel might seem excessive during construction but will significantly extend the pavement’s lifespan and prevent settling and deformation.
How Much Base Do You Need?
Below you’ll find a reference table with pre-calculated volumes of gravel and sand for common projects (patios, walkways, and driveways) of various dimensions. Projects with heavier loads or in extreme climate zones will require additional materials. Note that this table does NOT include the recommended 10-20% extra material.
Project Size | Gravel Needed (4″ – 6″ base) | Sand Needed (1″ base) |
---|---|---|
50 sq. ft. | 0.62 – 0.93 cu. yds. | 0.15 cu. yds. |
100 sq. ft. | 1.23 – 1.85 cu. yds. | 0.31 cu. yds. |
150 sq. ft. | 1.85 – 2.78 cu. yds. | 0.46 cu. yds. |
200 sq. ft. | 2.47 – 3.70 cu. yds. | 0.62 cu. yds. |
250 sq. ft. | 3.09 – 4.63 cu. yds. | 0.77 cu. yds. |
300 sq. ft. | 3.70 – 5.56 cu. yds. | 0.93 cu. yds. |
400 sq. ft. | 4.94 – 7.41 cu. yds. | 1.23 cu. yds. |
500 sq. ft. | 6.17 – 9.26 cu. yds. | 1.54 cu. yds. |
