How to Calculate Mortar Requirements

Calculating mortar requirements involves determining wall area, brick coverage, and mortar consumption rates. Here's a step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Calculate Wall Area

Multiply wall length by height to get total area:

  • Wall Length: 20 feet
  • Wall Height: 8 feet
  • Wall Area: 20 x 8 = 160 square feet

Step 2: Determine Brick Coverage

Different brick sizes have different coverage rates per square foot:

  • Standard bricks: 6.55 bricks per sq ft
  • Modular bricks: 7.0 bricks per sq ft
  • Queen bricks: 5.5 bricks per sq ft
  • King bricks: 5.0 bricks per sq ft

Step 3: Calculate Mortar Bags

For our 160 sq ft wall with standard bricks:

  • Bricks needed: 160 x 6.55 = 1,048 bricks
  • Mortar bags: 1,048 / 35 = 30 bags (80-lb bags)
  • Add 10% for waste: 30 x 1.1 = 33 bags
