Metal Roof Calculator

Calculate the exact amount of metal roofing materials needed for your project. Our calculator determines the number of panels, linear feet, and material costs based on your roof dimensions and panel specifications.

How to Calculate Metal Roofing Materials

Panel Layout Planning

Proper panel layout is crucial for accurate material calculations:

  • Panel direction: Usually run from ridge to eave for best drainage
  • Panel width: Effective coverage varies by profile type
  • Overlap requirements: Standing seam needs less overlap than corrugated
  • Waste factor: Simple roofs need 5-10%, complex roofs need 15-20%

Panel Types & Coverage

Different panel types offer varying coverage efficiency:

  • Standing Seam: 90% coverage, widths 16", 20", 24"
  • Corrugated: 85% coverage, widths 26", 28", 29"
  • Ribbed (R-Panel): 88% coverage, typically 36" wide
  • Metal Shingles: 95% coverage, widths 12", 16"

Pitch Adjustments

Roof pitch affects the actual surface area to be covered:

  • Low pitch (1/12-3/12): Minimal adjustment needed
  • Medium pitch (4/12-8/12): 5-20% additional material
  • Steep pitch (9/12+): 25-40% additional material
  • Complex roofs: May need field measurements for accuracy

Additional Materials Needed

Beyond panels, you'll need these additional components:

  • Underlayment: Synthetic or felt, covers entire roof area
  • Fasteners: Self-drilling screws with washers
  • Trim pieces: Eave, rake, ridge, and valley trim
  • Flashing: Around penetrations and transitions
  • Ridge caps: For roof peaks and hips
  • Closure strips: To seal panel ends (corrugated)
