Use our Grout Calculator to determine how much grout you need for your tile project. Choose between tile dimensions input for precise calculations or area-only input for quick estimates.

How to Calculate Grout Requirements

Calculating grout requirements depends on tile size, grout joint width and depth, and total area. Here's how to get accurate estimates.

Step 1: Measure Your Project

Start by determining the total area to be tiled:

  • For rectangular areas: Length x Width = Area
  • For multiple rooms: Add all individual areas together
  • Subtract areas for fixtures, cabinets, etc.

Step 2: Determine Grout Joint Specifications

Grout joint size depends on tile type and installation preference:

  • Small tiles (mosaics): 1/16" to 1/8" joints
  • Standard tiles (12" x 12"): 1/8" to 3/16" joints
  • Large format tiles: 3/16" to 1/4" joints
  • Natural stone: 1/4" to 3/8" joints

Step 3: Calculate Grout Volume

Use this example for 100 sq ft with 12" x 12" tiles and 1/8" joints:

  • Joint area per sq ft: (0.125" x 0.25" x 48") / 144 = 0.0104 sq ft
  • Total joint area: 100 sq ft x 0.0104 = 1.04 sq ft
  • Grout volume: 1.04 sq ft x joint depth = cubic volume

Step 4: Convert to Bags

Most grout comes in 25-pound bags that cover approximately:

  • 50-75 sq ft for 1/8" joints
  • 25-35 sq ft for 1/4" joints
  • 15-20 sq ft for 3/8" joints
  • Add 10% extra for waste and touch-ups

Grout Types and Applications

Choosing the right grout type is essential for durability and appearance. Different grouts work better for different applications.

Grout TypeJoint WidthBest ForCharacteristics
Unsanded GroutLess than 1/8"Glass tiles, mosaics, polished stoneSmooth finish, won't scratch tiles
Sanded Grout1/8" to 1/2"Most ceramic, porcelain tilesStronger, resists shrinking
Epoxy Grout1/16" to 1/2"Showers, kitchens, commercialStain-resistant, waterproof
Urethane Grout1/16" to 1/4"High-traffic areasFlexible, crack-resistant

Joint Width Guidelines

  • 1/16" (1.6mm): Glass tiles, small mosaics, polished marble
  • 1/8" (3.2mm): Standard ceramic and porcelain tiles
  • 3/16" (4.8mm): Large format tiles, rectified edges
  • 1/4" (6.4mm): Natural stone, irregular tiles
  • 3/8" (9.5mm): Outdoor installations, rustic look
  • 1/2" (12.7mm): Quarry tiles, industrial applications

Installation Tips

  • Clean tile joints thoroughly before grouting
  • Mix grout to a smooth, peanut butter consistency
  • Work diagonally across the surface
  • Remove excess grout before it dries
  • Seal grout lines 48-72 hours after installation
  • Use appropriate grout float for joint width
  • Keep mixed grout covered to prevent drying
