French Drain Calculator

Use our French Drain Calculator to estimate materials and costs for installing a French drain system. The calculator includes gravel, pipe, fabric, and labor costs with flow capacity estimates.

How to Calculate French Drain Costs

French drain costs depend on the length, depth, materials chosen, and local labor rates. The system consists of a perforated pipe surrounded by gravel and wrapped in landscape fabric.

Step 1: Calculate Excavation Volume

Determine the volume of soil to be excavated. Here's an example for a 100-foot drain:

  • Length: 100 feet
  • Width: 12 inches (1 foot)
  • Depth: 18 inches (1.5 feet)
  • Volume: 100 x 1 x 1.5 = 150 cubic feet
  • Convert to cubic yards: 150 / 27 = 5.56 cubic yards

Step 2: Calculate Material Costs

Materials include gravel, perforated pipe, landscape fabric, and fittings:

  • Gravel: 5.56 yards x $45/yard (pea gravel) = $250
  • 4-inch pipe: 100 feet x $3.00/foot = $300
  • Landscape fabric: 100 feet x 1 foot x $1.50/sq ft = $150
  • Fittings and connections: 5 sets x $25 = $125
  • Total materials: $825

Step 3: Calculate Labor Costs

Labor includes excavation, installation, and backfilling:

  • Excavation: 5.56 yards x $50/yard = $278
  • Installation: 100 feet x $8/foot = $800
  • Backfill: 5.56 yards x $25/yard = $139
  • Total labor: $1,217

Total project cost: $825 + $1,217 = $2,042 ($20.42 per linear foot)

Step 4: Consider Additional Factors

Additional costs may include:

  • Catch basins for long runs: $150-300 each
  • Permits: $50-200 depending on location
  • Utility location/marking: $200-500
  • Site restoration: $5-15 per square foot

French Drain Installation Guide

Design Considerations

  • Slope: Minimum 1/8" per foot, ideal 1/4" per foot for proper drainage
  • Depth: 18-24" typical, deeper near foundations or in cold climates
  • Width: 8-12" for residential, 18-24" for commercial applications
  • Outlet: Must drain to daylight, storm drain, or dry well

Installation Steps

  1. Planning: Call 811 for utility location, obtain permits if required
  2. Excavation: Dig trench to proper depth with consistent slope
  3. Fabric Installation: Line trench with landscape fabric, leaving overlap
  4. Base Gravel: Add 2-3" of gravel base, level and compact lightly
  5. Pipe Installation: Place perforated pipe holes down, maintain slope
  6. Gravel Cover: Surround pipe with gravel, cover 6" above pipe
  7. Fabric Wrap: Fold fabric over gravel, secure with landscape pins
  8. Backfill: Cover with topsoil, compact in layers, restore surface

Material Selection

  • Pipe: 4" perforated PVC most common, 6" for heavy flows
  • Gravel: Clean, angular stone, 3/4" to 1.5" diameter preferred
  • Fabric: Non-woven geotextile, 4-6 oz weight recommended
  • Fittings: Solid pipe for connections, tees for branches

Common Applications

  • Foundation Drainage: Prevent basement water infiltration
  • Yard Drainage: Eliminate standing water in low areas
  • Retaining Walls: Relieve hydrostatic pressure behind walls
  • Driveway Drainage: Prevent water damage to paved surfaces
  • Sports Fields: Maintain proper playing surface conditions

Maintenance Requirements

  • Annual Inspection: Check outlet for clogs or damage
  • Cleaning: Flush system if flow decreases significantly
  • Vegetation Control: Keep trees and shrubs away from drainage path
  • Surface Maintenance: Monitor for settling or surface depressions
