Door Weight Calculator

Use our Door Weight Calculator to determine the weight of any door based on dimensions, material, and glass content. Get hardware recommendations and shipping requirements for proper installation.

How to Calculate Door Weight

Door weight depends on dimensions, material density, and any glass components. Accurate weight calculations are essential for selecting proper hardware and determining shipping requirements.

Step 1: Calculate Door Volume

Multiply width x height x thickness to get total volume. For example, a standard exterior door:

  • Width: 36 inches
  • Height: 80 inches
  • Thickness: 1.75 inches (1-3/4")
  • Volume: 36 x 80 x 1.75 = 5,040 cubic inches
  • Convert to cubic feet: 5,040 / 1,728 = 2.92 cubic feet

Step 2: Apply Material Density

Multiply volume by material density (weight per cubic foot):

  • Hollow Core Wood: 2.92 ft3 x 25 lbs/ft3 = 73 lbs
  • Solid Core Wood: 2.92 ft3 x 45 lbs/ft3 = 131 lbs
  • Steel Entry Door: 2.92 ft3 x 40 lbs/ft3 = 117 lbs
  • Fiberglass: 2.92 ft3 x 35 lbs/ft3 = 102 lbs

Step 3: Add Glass Weight

Glass adds significant weight. Standard calculations:

  • Glass weight: ~2.5 lbs per square foot per 1/8" thickness
  • Typical door glass: 1/2" thick = 10 lbs per square foot
  • Example: 4 square feet of glass = 40 lbs additional weight

Step 4: Determine Hardware Requirements

Select appropriate hardware based on total weight:

  • Under 40 lbs: 2 standard hinges sufficient
  • 40-75 lbs: 2-3 heavy-duty hinges recommended
  • Over 75 lbs: 3 heavy-duty hinges required
  • Over 150 lbs: Steel frame and reinforcement necessary

Door Materials and Weight Factors

Interior Door Materials

  • Hollow Core Wood: Lightweight, 20-30 lbs typical, honeycomb or foam core
  • Solid Core Wood: Heavy, 40-80 lbs typical, particle board or wood composite core
  • Solid Wood: Variable weight, 35-60 lbs, depends on wood species
  • Hollow Metal: Commercial use, 30-50 lbs, steel with insulation

Exterior Door Materials

  • Steel: Most common, 80-120 lbs, insulated with foam core
  • Fiberglass: Durable, 70-100 lbs, composite construction
  • Wood: Traditional, 60-150 lbs, varies by species and construction
  • Aluminum: Lightweight, 40-80 lbs, commercial applications

Hardware Selection Guidelines

  • Hinges: Choose based on door weight and frequency of use
  • Door Closers: Size according to door weight and width
  • Locksets: Heavy-duty versions for doors over 100 lbs
  • Weatherstripping: Consider compression from door weight

Installation Considerations

  • Frame Reinforcement: Steel backing plates for heavy doors
  • Foundation Support: Adequate floor support under heavy doors
  • Clearances: Account for door sag over time with heavy doors
  • Maintenance: Regular hinge lubrication for heavy doors

Shipping and Handling

  • Standard Shipping: Doors under 50 lbs, residential delivery
  • Heavy Package: 50-150 lbs, additional fees and handling
  • Freight Shipping: Over 150 lbs, commercial delivery required
  • Special Handling: Glass doors require careful packaging
