How to Calculate Block Wall Materials

Calculating block wall materials involves determining the wall area, selecting appropriate block size, and accounting for mortar joints. Here's how to do it step by step.

Step 1: Calculate Wall Area

Multiply the wall length by its height to get the total area:

  • Wall Length: 20 feet
  • Wall Height: 8 feet
  • Wall Area: 20 x 8 = 160 square feet

Step 2: Determine Blocks per Square Foot

This depends on block size and mortar joint thickness. For standard 8" x 8" x 16" blocks with 3/8" mortar joints:

  • Block length with mortar: 16" + 0.375" = 16.375"
  • Block height with mortar: 8" + 0.375" = 8.375"
  • Blocks per sq ft: 144 / (16.375 x 8.375) = 1.05 blocks

Step 3: Calculate Total Blocks Needed

Multiply wall area by blocks per square foot and add waste allowance:

  • Blocks needed: 160 sq ft x 1.05 = 168 blocks
  • Add 5% for waste: 168 x 1.05 = 176 blocks (round up)

Step 4: Calculate Mortar Requirements

Generally, one 80-pound bag of mortar mix is needed for every 100 blocks:

  • Mortar bags needed: 176 blocks / 100 = 1.76 bags
  • Round up to 2 bags for this project

Block Sizes and Applications

Different block sizes serve different purposes in construction. Choose the right size based on your wall's structural requirements and local building codes.

Block SizePrimary UseBlocks per sq ft
4" x 8" x 16"Interior walls, partitions1.05
6" x 8" x 16"Residential exterior walls1.05
8" x 8" x 16"Standard exterior walls (most common)1.05
10" x 8" x 16"Commercial buildings, high loads1.05
12" x 8" x 16"Heavy-duty applications, retaining walls1.05
8" x 8" x 8"Half blocks, corners, ends2.1

Mortar Joint Standards

  • 3/8 inch (9.5mm): Standard joint thickness - most common
  • 1/2 inch (12.7mm): Wide joint - easier for beginners
  • 1/4 inch (6.4mm): Thin joint - professional finish

Block Types

  • Hollow blocks: Most common, lighter weight, good insulation
  • Solid blocks: Maximum strength, used for load-bearing walls
  • Split-face blocks: Decorative textured surface
  • Lintel blocks: U-shaped blocks for door/window openings
