Aluminum Weight Calculator
Use our Aluminum Weight Calculator to determine the weight and cost of aluminum materials for your project. Calculate weights for plates, rods, tubes, angles, channels, and I-beams in various aluminum grades.
How to Calculate Aluminum Weight
Calculating aluminum weight requires understanding the shape geometry and material density. Different aluminum alloys have slightly different densities, affecting the final weight calculation.
Step 1: Determine the Shape
Choose the appropriate aluminum shape for your calculation:
- Plate/Sheet: Flat rectangular pieces (width x thickness x length)
- Round Rod: Solid cylindrical bars (diameter x length)
- Tube: Hollow cylindrical sections (outer diameter - inner diameter x length)
- Angle: L-shaped structural pieces (leg dimensions x thickness)
- Channel: C-shaped structural sections
- I-Beam: I-shaped structural beams
Step 2: Calculate Volume
The volume calculation depends on the shape. Here are the basic formulas:
- Rectangular: Volume = Length x Width x Thickness
- Cylindrical: Volume = π x (Radius)2 x Length
- Hollow Cylinder: Volume = π x (Outer Radius2 - Inner Radius2) x Length
Step 3: Apply Material Density
Multiply the volume by the aluminum density. Common aluminum densities:
- Aluminum 1100: 0.098 lbs/cubic inch
- Aluminum 6061-T6: 0.098 lbs/cubic inch
- Aluminum 7075-T6: 0.101 lbs/cubic inch
- Cast Aluminum 356: 0.096 lbs/cubic inch
Step 4: Calculate Cost
Multiply the total weight by the current aluminum price per pound. Prices vary based on:
- Aluminum grade and temper
- Market conditions
- Quantity purchased
- Finish requirements (anodized, powder coated, etc.)
Aluminum Grades and Properties
Different aluminum alloys offer varying properties for specific applications. Understanding these characteristics helps in material selection.
| Grade | Density (lbs/in3) | Strength (ksi) | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1100 | 0.098 | 13 | Chemical equipment, food containers |
| 3003 | 0.099 | 22 | Cookware, heat exchangers |
| 5052 | 0.097 | 33 | Marine applications, fuel tanks |
| 6061-T6 | 0.098 | 45 | Structural applications, frames |
| 7075-T6 | 0.101 | 83 | Aerospace, high-stress components |
