Aggregate Calculator

Use our Aggregate Calculator to estimate how much aggregate material you need for road construction, drainage, concrete work, and infrastructure projects. The calculator accounts for compaction factors and calculates both loose and compacted volumes.

How to Calculate Aggregate Requirements

Calculating aggregate requirements involves understanding compaction factors and proper material densities. Here's how to approach your aggregate calculations:

Step 1: Measure Your Area

Determine the dimensions of your project:

  • Length and width of the area to be covered
  • Required depth/thickness of aggregate layer
  • Account for any irregular shapes or slopes

Step 2: Calculate Volume

Multiply length x width x depth to get cubic volume. Convert to cubic yards by dividing cubic feet by 27.

  • Example: 50' x 20' x 0.5' = 500 cubic feet
  • Convert: 500 / 27 = 18.5 cubic yards

Step 3: Account for Compaction

Aggregate compacts during installation, reducing volume by 15-25%. Order extra material to account for this compaction.

  • Base course typically compacts to 85% of loose volume
  • Drainage stone compacts less (88-90%)
  • Road base requires heavy compaction (80-85%)

Step 4: Convert to Weight

Different aggregate types have different densities. Multiply your compacted volume by the material density:

  • Base aggregate: 1.8 tons per cubic yard
  • Drainage stone: 1.5 tons per cubic yard
  • Concrete aggregate: 1.6 tons per cubic yard

Aggregate Types and Applications

Different aggregate types serve specific construction purposes. Understanding their properties helps you choose the right material for your project.

Common Aggregate Types

Base Aggregate (Road Base)

Dense-graded aggregate for foundations and roadways

  • Density: 1.8 tons/yd3
  • Applications: Road construction, parking lots
  • Compaction: 85% typical

Drainage Aggregate (#57)

Open-graded stone for drainage applications

  • Density: 1.5 tons/yd3
  • Applications: French drains, pipe bedding
  • Compaction: 88% typical

Concrete Aggregate

Graded stone for concrete mix designs

  • Density: 1.6 tons/yd3
  • Applications: Concrete production
  • Compaction: 90% typical

Railroad Ballast

Angular stone for railway track support

  • Density: 1.4 tons/yd3
  • Applications: Railway construction
  • Compaction: 85% typical
