This free calculator helps determine the required amount of limestone for construction and landscaping projects. The calculations use density values for different types of limestone, and you can also enter your own material density.
Results
The limestone calculator offers three calculation methods. Use the dimensional measurement method for standard rectangular areas — enter length, width, and depth. It’s best to divide irregular areas into simple shapes and calculate the volume for each separately.
After entering the dimensions, select the limestone type or specify your density value for specific materials. You can also optionally calculate the total cost of materials.
These are standard values, but we recommend confirming specific densities with your material supplier for greater accuracy.
Limestone Type | Density (tons/yd³) | Density (metric tones/m³) |
---|---|---|
Low-density | 1.65 | 1.96 |
Medium-density | 2.03 | 2.41 |
High-density | 2.23 | 2.65 |
Crushed | 1.89 | 2.24 |
Loose | 1.30 | 1.54 |
Solid | 2.27 | 2.69 |
Calculation Example
Let’s say we need to cover a driveway with crushed limestone measuring 18 feet long and 12 feet wide, with a layer thickness of 5 inches.
- First, convert the depth to feet: 5 inches = 5 ÷ 12 = 0.417 feet
- Calculate the volume in cubic feet: 18 × 12 × 0.417 = 90.07 cubic feet
- Convert to cubic yards: 90.07 ÷ 27 = 3.34 cubic yards
- Calculate the material weight (for crushed limestone): 3.34 × 1.89 = 6.31 tons
- Add a 10% extra for settling and irregularities: 6.31 × 1.1 = 6.94 tons
Therefore, this project will require approximately 7 tons of crushed limestone.
