Crushed Stone Calculator

This Crushed Stone Calculator calculates the amount of crushed stone needed for your project based on its volume (length, width, and depth) and material density. You can select from our predefined materials or enter custom specifications. The calculator can also provide an estimate of the total material cost.

How Much Crushed Stone Do You Need?

If you prefer to calculate manually instead of using the calculator above, follow these steps to determine your crushed stone requirements:

  1. Measure the length and width of your area
  2. Determine the required depth of coverage (typically between 2 to 4 inches)
  3. Convert the depth to feet (divide by 12) – optional but simplifies calculations
  4. Multiply these three values to calculate the volume in cubic feet
  5. Divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards
  6. Multiply by the material density (crushed stone typically weighs 1.4-1.7 tons per cubic yard)

Calculation Example:

Consider a project for a driveway measuring 24 feet long by 10 feet wide with a crushed stone depth of 3 inches:

  1. Calculate the volume:
    • 24′ × 10′ × 0.25′ (3 inches = 0.25 feet) = 60 cubic feet
    • 60 ÷ 27 = 2.22 cubic yards
  2. Calculate the weight:
    • Minimum: 2.22 × 1.4 = 3.11 tons
    • Maximum: 2.22 × 1.7 = 3.77 tons

You would need approximately 3.1-3.8 tons of crushed stone for this project. We recommend ordering 5-10% extra to account for uneven surfaces and natural compaction.

Below you’ll find detailed specifications for common construction materials to help with your calculations.
