Asphalt Calculator

The Asphalt Calculator helps you estimate how much Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), commonly known as blacktop, you’ll need for your construction project. Whether you’re paving a driveway, parking lot, schoolyard, or any other surface, this tool will give you the amount of asphalt needed so you don’t end up with too much or too little material.

The calculator works with three basic measurements: your pavement area’s length, width, and thickness. You can also plug in the cost per ton and density of the material if you want a more precise budget estimate. If you don’t specify these, the calculator uses the standard asphalt density of 145 lbs/ft³ (2,322 kg/m³) and leaves out the cost calculation.

Make sure to take all measurements after the soil has been compacted to get accurate results. If you’re working with an irregularly shaped area, break it down into simple geometric shapes and add up the calculations for each section.

It’s always recommended to order about 5-6% more asphalt than what you calculate. This is especially important for larger areas, where even a slight measurement error could leave you short on asphalt. Ordering an extra ton of material upfront will cost way less than scheduling a second delivery and paying for crew waiting time.
